Domestic Electrics

Is It Time To Call An Electrician?

Whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, you know that, every so often, you might come across a problem within your home that looks as though it needs a little attention to fix.

However, when it comes to troubleshooting any issues with your home’s electricity, it’s important to be aware of what you may be able to take care of yourself and what should be left down to the professionals. By familiarising yourself with a range of different common electricity problems, you’ll be better informed to decide whether or not it’s a job that you can do yourself or whether – for your own safety – it should be handed over to a qualified electrician.

Here are just a few of the problems you might be facing – is it time to call an electrician?

Blown Fuses

A blown fuse within an appliance’s plug is a fairly common problem to experience and one which you might have heard can be always be solved fairly easily without professional assistance – however, this isn’t necessarily always the case.

If the plug and wiring of your appliance seems to be in good condition, this may be a fairly easy problem to fix and you may just need to replace the fuse.   You can do this by picking up a new fuse in any good hardware store, carefully removing the screws under the base of the plug using a screwdriver and replacing the old fuse with the new one – make sure you check that the new fuse is the same amperage as the old one. If the fuse was, indeed, the problem, your appliance should work as normal again once it’s plugged back in.

However, if you examine the plug and find that there are any burns, scorch marks or other damage on the plug and wiring, it’s best not to attempt to fix this yourself and to call for the help of an electrician. This is also the case if you attempt to fix the fuse and find that this doesn’t put the appliance back into working order – a professional electrician may be able to help.

Of course, if you find fuses within your home blowing on a regular basis, it may be that you need your fuse box replacing entirely. This is just one of the many services that we offer here are ProElec Electrical Services.

Exposed Wiring

Whether attached to an appliance or directly connected to the electrical systems of your home (overhead light bulbs, for example), you should never attempt to fix exposed wiring yourself – doing so will leave you at risk of suffering an electric shock.

If the exposed wiring is a part of an appliance that can be easily replaced (extension leads, phone chargers, etc.), we’d recommend simply replacing the appliance. However, if the exposed wiring is attached to a more heavy duty appliance such as a TV or washing machine or is a part of the internal wiring within your home, we recommend that you immediately seek the attention of an electrician to fix this for you.

Lighting Installation

As far as lighting installation goes, the most we’d recommend you do for yourself is change a light bulb – anything more could be dangerous.

If you’re looking to have trickier internal lights fixed (spotlights, for example) or have brand new lighting installed, we’d recommend calling on the assistance of an electrician to handle this for you. Light installation can often include complicated practices that aren’t for those who are unqualified to carry them out – keep yourself free from risk of electric shock by handing over the work to a professional electrician.
