How Solar PV Can Reduce Your Energy Costs

Solar PV panels generate electricity during daylight hours, reducing the amount of electricity your home or business needs to import from the grid. Any surplus generation can be stored in a battery for use later or exported to the grid, with eligible customers receiving payment through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.

Solar PV System Options

Solar PV panels can be installed using on-roof, in-roof or ground-mounted systems. On-roof systems are fitted above the existing roof covering and are the most common option. In-roof systems replace part of the roof covering to provide a more integrated appearance, while ground-mounted systems may be considered where suitable land is available.

A south-facing roof will generally provide the highest overall annual generation, but east and west-facing roofs can also perform well. An east-west arrangement spreads generation more evenly across the day, which may better suit how electricity is used within the property. Roof pitch, available space, structural condition and shading are assessed as part of the system design.

How a Solar PV System Works

Solar panels generate direct-current (DC) electricity from daylight. An inverter converts this into alternating-current (AC) electricity that can be used by the property’s electrical installation. The electricity generated is used within the property first, with any surplus directed to battery storage where installed or exported to the grid.

The position of the panels, inverter, battery and associated electrical equipment is determined during the system design and site survey. The completed installation is connected, tested and commissioned in accordance with the relevant electrical and MCS requirements.

Our Solar PV Installation Process

We begin by discussing the property, electricity usage and the customer’s objectives. This allows us to prepare an initial system proposal showing the recommended equipment, estimated annual generation and projected savings. If the customer wishes to proceed, we complete a site survey covering the roof, shading, electrical installation, equipment locations and access requirements.

Before installation, we confirm the final design, DNO requirements, scaffolding arrangements, deliveries and agreed start date. A typical solar PV and battery installation takes approximately three to four days, although this may vary depending on the size and complexity of the system.

Testing, Commissioning and Customer Handover

Once the installation is complete, we test and commission the solar PV and battery storage system. We then explain how the system operates, demonstrate the monitoring platform and, where battery storage is installed, show the customer how to view and manage stored energy.

The customer receives a handover pack containing the system schematic, electrical certification, solar PV test results, equipment information, warranties and operating instructions. We also complete the required Building Regulations notification and provide the MCS certificate once the installation has been registered. Any relevant DNO documentation is included within the handover information.

Site Survey and Solar PV System Design

Before the final system design is approved, we complete a site survey to confirm the property’s suitability. This includes assessing the available roof area, orientation, pitch, shading, proposed panel layout, mounting arrangement and installation access.

We also inspect the relevant parts of the electrical installation and identify suitable cable routes and positions for the inverter, battery storage and associated equipment. The survey findings are used to confirm or amend the proposed system design before installation proceeds. Estimated generation is calculated using the property-specific design information in accordance with the applicable MCS methodology.

DNO Applications: G98 and G99

Solar PV and battery storage systems operating in parallel with the electricity network must be notified to, or approved by, the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

Fully type-tested systems with an aggregate generating capacity of no more than 16A per phase may qualify for the G98 connection process. This corresponds to 3.68kW on a single-phase supply or 11.04kW on a three-phase supply. Systems exceeding 16A per phase, or certain combined solar and battery arrangements, require a G99 application and DNO approval before connection.

Where required by the DNO, an approved export-limitation scheme may be incorporated into the design. ProElec determines the appropriate connection process and handles the relevant DNO application or notification as part of the installation.
