Electrics in the home – a useful guide

electrics in the home

We often get asked by homeowners if they can carry out electrical jobs around the house themselves. The simplest answer we always give is, it is better to leave it to the experts i.e. a person or company that has been approved by a governing body such as the NICEIC. ProElec Electrical Services Ltd are a registered NICEIC approved contractor and registered under the Part P scheme.

UK Building Regulations Part P – improving safety in the home

UK Building Regulations Part P was introduced in 2005 and stipulated that any electrical installation work carried out in homes must, by law, meet the Building Regulations. The main aim for this was to improve safety within the home and protect people from fire and electric shocks.

As a homeowner, you have a duty of care to ensure that anyone living in and visiting your home, is safe. If anybody is electrocuted or harmed as a result of the electrical work you have done, you can be prosecuted.

What electrical jobs need Part P notification?

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, you have to give notification of work carried out for various electrical jobs around the home – property re-wires, fuse board replacements, installation of a new shower circuit, installation of a new cooker circuit, underfloor heating systems, and much more.

Lee Churton, Owner of ProElec Electrical Services Ltd comments, “We often see homeowner attempting to carry out smaller electrical jobs like installing light switches and light fittings. They think it’s a simple job that would be too costly to call an electrician in for. But sometimes what they think is a simple job turns out to be anything but simple.

We have been called out many times by homeowners to rectify faulty wiring – from damaged light fittings, appliances, cables and switches. Even instances where appliances and fittings that have caught on fire.

Think before you alter the electrics in the home It will costs more to put the electrical problem right than it would have cost in the first place. Electricity is dangerous and can kill, therefore we always advise just to leave it to the professionals!”
